🦃 Planning Friendsgiving for your students 🦃
With November among us, it is time to start talking about class friendsgiving. Each year I have a class Friendsgiving for my students, to ensure they get a fabulous celebration before going home for a week! To prepare for this, in the weeks leading up to that Friday before break, I do a few different things in and out of the classroom. In class, I plan lessons talking about friendship and what a good friend is and how we can practice being good friends. We also talk about why people do Friendsgiving celebrations.
The week before I have students choose a random classmate name from a bowl, and write that person a gratitude gram. We also write a gratitude gram to someone around the school. Outside of school, I look for cute decorations (tjmaxx/marshalls/homegoods/amazom/hobbylobby). Since I have been doing this a white, I have collected stuff, but also look for a few specific things each year: place cards, place mats, and sometimes plates/napkins/cup if I don’t have a parent bringing it.
The week before I send home our Friendsgiving letter, explain to parents what it is and encouraging them to send something. The point is to share items among your friends and students get really excited about that. Students decorate a placemat, that goes at a fellow classmates seat. And they complete their gratitude grams🧡
The day of I arrange the desks to be in one or two long tables so they are all together. I cover the “tables” with brown rolled paper. Put the placemats down, write names on placecards and place them at each seat along with their gratitude grams, and then I set the table with the plates/cups/napkins. When the students come we will pass out food, and talk about what we are thankful for.
It is one of my absolute favorite things to do with my class and SO worth it!😊

You never forget your first year of teaching. From setting up a classroom to striking a work-life balance, year one of any teacher's career can be a roller coaster. At a time when many teachers are choosing to leave the profession, Year One follows my teacher-gram friend, Jenna (@miss.macnulty), a third-grade teacher, as she navigates ALL the ups and downs of her first year in the classroom. Listen on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and you can get free, downloadable classroom resources on the site!
