How I deal with burnout

How I deal with burnout, tips for my upcoming multiplication unit, and outfits of course!

Catching up:

This might have been the longest week we have had all year. Tuesday felt like Friday, and then so did every day that followed.

As many of you know, I am a teacher in Florida,  which means that most of the time things can be really challenging following an election.  So many people do not understand how directly, we as teachers are impacted by the decisions of various elections. We not only have to worry about the impact they will have on us in our profession but also how they will impact the lives of our students and their families. Sending love to everyone, now let’s talk outfits

Here's the 411, teaching is TOUGH. Feeling good about what you are wearing HELPS!

Today we will be covering:

Teacher outfits of the week

 Weekly Tip: Masters of Multiplication

You Asked

Welcome to our Magical Learning Adventure where we wear what we want because we like it!

Election aside, these outfits were poppin!

It was a long week, but our outfit game didn’t miss a beat!

Before I begin, I want to say that this Idea could be used in younger grades with addition and subtraction, or in the older grades with the same multiplication and division!

OKAY - every October/November (dependent on how many hurricanes we have) in third grade I start something with my students called Masters of Multiplication. Now what I am about to say may feel controversial to many, but I want to stress that it WORKS. We do timed fluency checks each week, where students start on 0 and go all the way through to 12. Every Friday students complete their timed fact, based on what they have passed the previous week. Students track their own success in their agenda, and we track as a class with our Multiplication Ninjas (all linked below).

The class goal is to make it to 12 by the time we take our final standardized test for math in mid-May. The reason I focus on building their fluency in this way is because in 3rd grade especially, everything we do after multiplication, is dependent on being able to do multiplication, so the more confident they are with their facts, the better they feel!

Some ways I encourage my students to build this fluency is through Reflex Math (I got it this year by writing a grant) and basic flash cards. Students who, by May, have mastered their facts, are invited to the Masters of Multiplication Cookie Cake Party that I host during lunch.

IMPORTANT: to do things like this in class, it is very important to discuss in length that everyone will work at their own pace. Some weeks you won’t pass and that is okay. If many weeks go by without passing, let’s come up with a plan to practice at home. The culture around tracking our own progress, and celebrating our classmate’s success rather than pointing out their failures, is VERY important!

Your questions- ANSWERED

“Do you ever feel burnt out as a teacher? You seem to bring a lot of energy to the class.”

I absolutely feel burnt out as a teacher. Being a teacher is insanely exhausting, over stimulating, and challenging ESPECIALLY when it feels like we are always having to fight for what we need and work up hill.

That being said, I chose be a teacher knowing it was going to be hard (granted it definitely is more challenging than what they tell you at teacher school 😅). I definitely have moments and days where I do not feel like a magical unicorn fairy. But I try not to sit in that for long. I feel A LOT of relief from talking to coworkers, and my teacher friends. Solidarity and knowing we are all struggling together oddly makes me feel better.

I also plan things with my own sanity in mind. I know myself as a teacher, I know my strengths and weaknesses so as often as I can, I try to play into my strengths. And finally as we all know, I use fashion as a way to make myself excited about the day. I look forward to planning and sharing my outfits!

So moral of the story I VERY much feel burnt out just like all teachers do, but I try my best to do things that I know will foster a positive energy for myself and therefore my students.
