Every year I get questions about what I get my students for the holidays and I want to start by saying you do not need to get your students anything for the holidays. But I do host a holiday book donation every year that makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside, all the while sending my student home with some fun books to read over break.
TO BEGIN, I got this idea from my bestie Taelor, a fellow teacher who does this with her 5th graders (ILY).
How it works: there a few ways you can go about this, but this is how I have found it to be the MOST efficient. I start by creating a Holiday Book Donation wishlist. I search for books on amazon that look interesting, and I pick books with my students in mind. By now, I know a lot about their interests, and try to go for fun books!
Once I have my list created, I share it with all of my family friends. You can post it on your instagram or FB. The goal is to share it with everyone, and encourage others to share too! I have found the a lot of people really enjoy doing things like this over the holidays because it is an easy and inexpensive way to spread some holiday CHEER✨! When I have received all of the books, I wrap each one, and usually attached a candy cane or a little poppit, to add a little extra fun. Then I like to write each student/family a little card wishing them a wonderful holiday seasons, and I always include that each gift was donated by members of the community looking to spread some extra holiday cheer to the coolest 3rd graders ever!
My goal with this is to choose books that excite students. I go for a lot of graphic novels because 3rd graders find them to be so cool. I also choose the books with their reading level in mind, I want to make sure the students getting the books, can read them!
